This book examines the history of the rivalry between Western European cinema and Hollywood's hegemonic power throughout the 20th century. Following the First World War, Hollywood established global dominance through a series of strategic measures, effectively adapting to changes in the international film industry and market, and thereby intensifying the challenges faced by Western European nations in maintaining their cultural autonomy. Recognizing this challenge, Western European countries responded in various ways. However, after a process that evolved from infiltration to counter-infiltration, and ultimately to a comprehensive collapse of resistance, they were eventually overwhelmed by the American film industry - defeated by the forces of market choice.
