Religious Experience of John Humphrey Noyes

"Religious Experience of John Humphrey Noyes" offers a detailed chronicle of the spiritual and intellectual transformation of the founder of the Oneida Community. This work illuminates the early life and theological breakthroughs of John Humphrey Noyes, focusing on his departure from traditional congregationalism toward the radical doctrine of Perfectionism. By examining his personal struggles, conversion, and the subsequent development of his unique social and religious theories, the book provides a primary window into the mindset that fueled one of America's most famous utopian experiments.

The narrative follows Noyes through his formative years at Yale and Andover, capturing the intensity of his religious search and the controversy surrounding his claim of attaining a state of sinlessness. It explores the intersection of individual faith and social reorganization, illustrating how Noyes's personal revelations laid the groundwork for communal living and radical social change. "Religious Experience of John Humphrey Noyes" is an invaluable resource for scholars and readers interested in the religious landscape of the nineteenth century, the history of American communes, and the personal dynamics of spiritual leadership.
