The first structured clinical intervention framework for Pathological Demand Avoidance. No other named framework, training manual, or implementation protocol for PDA exists anywhere in the field.

RELATE is a mechanism-based clinical framework built from direct work with neurodivergent individuals in residential treatment and intensive outpatient settings. Every strategy in this manual ties to nervous system science: autonomy threat, intolerance of uncertainty, neuroception, and polyvagal theory. It targets the nervous system state driving demand avoidance, not the avoidant behavior itself. That distinction is why RELATE works where behavioral approaches fail.

The RELATE Framework
Six pillars that operationalize nervous system safety: Relationship, Empathy, Lower Demands, Adjust, Time, and Environment. Each pillar includes clinical rationale, implementation guidance, and common errors that carry risk of harm.

The ADAPT Protocol
A five-step in-the-moment decision tool (Assess, Decrease, Align, Pace, Test) for real-time crisis navigation. Designed to prevent coercive drift under pressure.

Three Application Modes
Supporter-to-PDA person. Adult PDA self-directed. Clinician-to-adult PDA client. Each mode has its own chapter with context-specific implementation guidance.

Five Assessment Instruments
RELATE Assessment (clinician version, parent report, and adult self-report), 48-Hour Demand Audit, and Supporter Self-Assessment. Structured tools for mapping demand triggers, Window of Tolerance baseline, co-occurring factors, and what safety looks like for a specific individual.

What This Manual Does Not Claim
RELATE is evidence-informed, not empirically validated. No randomized controlled trials exist for RELATE or for any PDA intervention approach. The entire PDA intervention field is pre-RCT. This manual is transparent about that because clinicians deserve honesty about what they are working with.
