Yes, there's ice hockey in Australia. There's a thriving national league featuring dedicated locals and adventurous internationals. They train and play like professionals, pushing their underground sport to the brink of emergence, but no-one gets paid. Age writer Will Brodie spent a year chronicling the quirky outposts of this unique hockey backwater, discovering a fragile but tenacious community populated by characters looking for more than wins and losses. If you like your sport intense but informal, exhilarating but irreverent, this book is for you. Come along for the read and let Reality Check remind you that sport should be fun and it can still be inspiring.
