Lieutenant Commander Jonas Mahmoud has served in the Imperial Services for a long time. Part of that, the earliest year, was in Specials Branch.
Jonas sure wishes he could remember that year, because events from then have come back now, twenty years later, to haunt him. He finds himself outside of his comfort zone, out of nursing, and struggling to save the human race from an ancient predator.
He's going to need a lot of help. Fortunately, he is accompanied by an artificial intelligence, and by Specials Branch Sergeant Laura Gilkey.
