This novel is set against the background of the papacy of Pope Nicholas I (858-867). It is the story of Fastrad, a Frankish priest who leaves his job as an advisor to Hincmar, the powerful (and historical) archbishop of Reims, to become an advisor to Nicholas, the visionary (and historical) pope in Rome. Fastrad is fictional, but the matters he works on and the conditions he experiences are real. The reader will get to watch the Catholic Church, under the leadership of the most influential pope between Pope Gregory I (590-604) and Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085), try to strengthen a continent that is staggering under the attacks of Norsemen and Saracens while it simultaneously deals with a growing hostility from the Byzantine Empire.
