The old gods are still here. They're just a little out of practice.

Ares, once feared as the Greek god of war, has spent the last two thousand years in semi-retirement. These days, he watches football, plays online combat games with Thor, rescues forgotten mythical creatures, and wonders if mortals still have any use for gods like him.

Then an aging professional football player named John Buckles reaches the end of his patience. His career is fading, his endorsements are slipping away, and everyone around him seems ready to replace him with someone younger, flashier, and more marketable. In a moment of frustration, John asks Ares for strength.

To everyone's surprise-especially Ares-the prayer works.

What begins as one small favor soon draws in Thor, Bastet, Dionysus, Enoch the celestial scribe, and eventually the attention of higher divine powers. As the old gods rediscover the thrill of being praised, they must decide whether helping mortals again is a noble calling, a harmless diversion, or the first step toward repeating the mistakes that made humanity leave them behind.
