Eve returns home to anonymous small-town Australia where she meets Bailey through a chance encounter.

Total strangers from similar beginnings, they quickly realise how much they have in common and how profoundly they're about to change each other's lives. Both are fighting their own internal demons, both have memories they can't shake, and both are trapped in worlds they never expected.

Bailey hates his job, hates his parents and hates his life. But more than any of it, he hates the mistake from his past he cannot fix: his sister's death. He has a haunting memory of his own sense of failure and an irreplaceable void from the loss of his best friend in the world. His only companionship comes from Ethan-his layabout best friend. In a world of isolation, Bailey appreciates Ethan's friendship, but yearns for much more. He finds it in Eve.

Eve is battling a destructive family history. She hasn't seen her father for years, and is in a daily struggle with her childhood memories. She relies on medication to survive and only finds purpose in her work as a child counsellor where she desperately tries to ensure no one ever has to go through what she did.

When an extremely personal case goes wrong, she questions everything and returns home to escape. There she finally gains the realisation that so much of her life has been controlled. Her father forced her into fear, and her mother made her believe that she should never trust anyone. Bailey opens her eyes to everything she's missed.

Bailey and Eve forge a profound and intimate connection, showing each other that love can help make life's problems fade away. Neither forgets the past, but both start to move on.

But when betrayal and sabotage come between them, fate rests on a knife's edge. They learn that life and death, happiness and sorrow, all rest on a fine line. That life, like the pendulum, can go both ways.
