Parameter Optimization for the Fabrication

This book investigates the optimization of electrospinning parameters for the fabrication of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofiber mats intended for wound dressing applications. Box-Behnken experimental design was implemented to assess the combined effects of applied voltage, flow rate, spinning distance, and needle size on nanofiber morphology and performance. Nanofibers produced from 8% (w/v) PVA were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, with custom Python-based image analysis employed to quantify fiber diameter, uniformity, and porosity. Functional properties pertinent to wound care, such as swelling capacity and layer thickness, were evaluated under hydrated conditions. The results exhibit that fiber diameter and uniformity are significantly affected by parameter interactions, particularly between voltage and flow rate, while needle size substantially influences reproducibility. All samples displayed high porosity and considerable swelling, supporting their suitability for wound-healing environments. Overall, this study provides an integrated, data-driven framework for the controlled fabrication of PVA-based nanofiber wound dressings.
