This volume covers operas from the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1990s. Taking high quality as the chief criterion and diversity as a secondary concern, the reprinted articles and chapters fit into two general categories: studies of operas by particular composers and studies divided according to geographical and historical considerations. The first general category is subdivided into Studies of Ravel and Debussy, Puccini Studies, and Britten Studies, whereas the second is subdivided into German-Language Operas from the Turn of the Twentieth Century to the Second World War, Opera in the Soviet Union, and Opera in the United States.
