Poetical Matter examines how poets used scientific theories of matter to reshape their understandings of nature and of poetry itself. It also considers how science writers utilised poetry to formulate their theories, to bestow cultural legitimacy on the rapidly developing disciplines of chemistry and physics, and to communicate technical knowledge to non-specialist audiences. The book argues that, in nineteenth-century Britain, both poetry and the physical sciences were considered to be simultaneously empirical and speculative, deploying the observation and experimental manipulation of material things as the basis of inductive theorisations of natural processes. This methodological similarity prompted a dilemma which was shared by poets and science writers: while they acknowledged the explanatory power of philosophical materialism, they were also troubled by the threat that it seemed to pose to morality and religion.
