Mr. Moneypenny

"Mr. Moneypenny" is a powerful and thought-provoking satirical drama by the acclaimed American playwright Channing Pollock. Written at the height of the roaring twenties, the play serves as a modern morality tale that examines the devastating cost of personal ambition when divorced from spiritual and ethical grounding.

The story follows the life of John, an ordinary clerk who enters into a Faustian bargain with the eponymous "Mr. Moneypenny," a personification of Mammon and the ultimate symbol of financial power. As John ascends the heights of wealth and social status, he discovers that his newfound prosperity comes at the expense of his family, his integrity, and his peace of mind. Pollock utilizes expressionistic techniques and sharp social commentary to critique the dehumanizing effects of industrial-age capitalism and the "get-rich-quick" mentality of his era.

As a significant work of early 20th-century American theater, "Mr. Moneypenny" remains a striking critique of greed and a poignant reminder of the enduring value of the human spirit over material gain. This work is essential for readers interested in the history of social drama and the timeless struggle between character and commerce.
