This book focuses on the modern mathematics or New Math reform of the 1960s, usually seen as an international movement in which the participants shared common beliefs about the kind of mathematics to be taught and a corresponding pedagogy. In the first part of this book, the early roots of this reform movement will be retraced: Experts in history of mathematics education review the arguments proposed and trace the main currents which defined modern mathematics in Europe and in the US. In the second part of this book, several researchers will discuss how modern mathematics was implemented in primary or secondary school mathematics in different countries around the world. Country-specific motives, influences from other countries and particularities of the reform movement will be analyzed. In a final chapter, we reflect on differences and similarities, and formulate answers to the question to what extent modern mathematics can be regarded as a truly international movement.
