In Bill Conlon's story collection, Missing All the Stars, Danny Clare's search for human connection at different stages of his life guides us through the dark streets of New Haven's after-hours scenes in the 1970's. The title novella tells of Danny's search for sexual identity in his relationship with a young transgender street-person at the edge of societal constraints. In "Business on Thompson Street," white Danny finds and loses love with a Black sex worker. "Everybody Does Something" highlights the dangers of the extra-legal milieu of "the life." "The View from 302" looks back at youthful desire from an older person's perspective. Conlon's characters confront racism, homophobia, and misogyny with vibrant dialogue in credible situations, leaving the reader with a solid sense of the time and its people.
