Memoirs of an Infantry Officer

"Memoirs of an Infantry Officer" is a profound and intensely personal account of the horrors and disillusionment of the First World War. Written by the celebrated war poet Siegfried Sassoon, this semi-autobiographical work follows the protagonist, George Sherston, as he navigates the brutal realities of life in the trenches on the Western Front. From the tension of nighttime raids to the overwhelming carnage of the Battle of the Somme, the narrative captures the stark contrast between the decorated heroism of the battlefield and the internal struggle of a soldier questioning the morality and necessity of the conflict.

As a sequel to "Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man", this volume marks a significant shift in tone, moving from the idyllic English countryside to the mud and blood of France. Sassoon's lyrical yet unflinching prose provides an authentic glimpse into the psychological toll of mechanized warfare. The book culminates in a powerful act of defiance, as Sherston's growing anti-war sentiment leads him to risk his reputation and freedom to speak out against the continued slaughter. A cornerstone of 20th-century war literature, "Memoirs of an Infantry Officer" remains an essential exploration of courage, trauma, and the devastating impact of global conflict on the human spirit.
