George is a tormented soul who has been battling the disease of addiction. On a bitter winter night, bereft of all hope, he climbs a light stanchion at the local racetrack, fiercely determined to end his emotional pain and avoid the consequences sure to follow his latest binge. When George reaches the top, he loses his nerve, then his grip, and falls.

After he regains consciousness on a park bench in a mysterious land without any idea of where he is, who he is, or how he got there, George meets two beings that look exactly like him: Hawaiian Shirt George, a humble, wise manifestation of God who lives inside him, and Balderdash, his self-centered, narcissistic ego. Together, the trio embarks on the journey that lies before them. Along the way, George is introduced to a cast of characters as he confronts his sordid past and attempts to make decisions concerning his future.
