Germany, 1921/1922 - the harsh shadows of war are falling on a country where the forces that will lead the next war are already forming. Meta lives in dire circumstances, but she is able to win over Bernhard, for whom the future seems bright because of his wealthy family. Mimer, a former soldier and member of a paramilitary secret organisation, becomes Bernhard's idol. He and his accomplices intend to bring down the Republic and shape the destiny of the nation in their own way. And they want Bernhard to participate in an assassination attempt on a Democratic politician.
The more Meta rejects and opposes Mimer's scheme, the more she is invited to develop empathy and understanding.
The novel includes historical events surrounding the terrorist attack on German Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau in June 1922. And although the plot is fictitious, the central issue is not.
