Les Premieres De Jean Racine

"Les Premieres De Jean Racine" is a detailed and authoritative exploration of the initial stage productions of the works of Jean Racine, one of the greatest tragic dramatists in French history. Written by the renowned theater historian Henry Lyonnet, this work provides an invaluable record of the 17th-century theatrical world. Lyonnet meticulously recreates the atmosphere, reception, and logistical realities surrounding the debut of Racine's masterpieces, from "La Thébaïde" to "Athalie."

This scholarly yet accessible study delves into the cast lists, the rivalries between theatrical troupes, and the immediate impact these plays had on the audiences of the Grand Siècle. By examining the premieres, Lyonnet offers readers a unique perspective on the evolution of Racine's craft and his rise to prominence within the court of Louis XIV. This book serves as an essential resource for students of French literature, theater historians, and anyone interested in the Golden Age of drama. It illuminates the intersection of literary genius and the practicalities of the stage, preserving the legacy of Racine's contributions to world literature.
