The performance of most tasks requires some interactionbetween the cerebral hemispheres. Despite this fact, past researchhas mainly focused on demonstrating that each hemisphere isspecialised for certain processes and has largely neglected thisinteraction. Recent research has recognised the need for a betterunderstanding of the way in which resources are shared between thecerebral hemispheres. While these studies have shed light onfactors external to the individuals being tested, such as the thenature of the tasks to be performed, the stimuli used, anddifferent measurement methods, they have largely neglectedvariables that differ between individuals. This work reviews thehemispheric interaction literature and presents a series of studiesshedding light on the influence of internal factors, including sex, age, handedness, laterality, practice, attention, and hemisphericactivation on the sharing of information between the two cerebralhemispheres. Special attention is given to the influence ofanatomical and functional lateralisation as well as corpus callosumstructure in the modulation of hemispheric interactionsefficiency.
