In the first volume [HOW IT ALL HAPPENED] Reg Deighton visits a grown Jamie, now a married man, but known and loved by Reg since he was only ten. Steph, Jamie's partner, is a gifted violinist who now teaches in the same primary school as Jamie. These three people, in a brief meeting, now learn more about each other than most people do in a lifetime. The sequel [ANANDAM] tells how Colin, a student Jamie befriended when they were both at college, coaxes Reg and Jamie to join him at Anandam, a revolutionary new community in South India. They are wildly happy there and, in the third volume [THE WAY AHEAD], they are joined by Steph. The book ends with a rousing farewell speech to the assembled community by Kris, the charismatic retiring head of the community, who now hands over to his son Arul.
