Set in the red-clay town of Plumb, Temperance County, Alabama, in 1911, It Cures What Ails You follows the arrival of Professor Augustus Lamar Fenwick's traveling medicine show. Joined by Mademoiselle Delphine LaRue, Olaf Brekke (billed as the only Norwegian in Alabama), and a gray mule named Senator, the Professor offers his Celebrated Sovereign Restorative, legally labeled as 91 per cent alcohol and 9 per cent optimism. While local pharmacist Ferris Tubb attempts to expose the tonic and federal chemist Everett Coombs arrives from Washington to test it, the county undergoes a bizarre special election that ultimately declares the controversial tonic its official beverage.
