Families lie, vampires are real, and friends, be they human, animal, or something else entirely, can save your life.

Gracie loves her big Italian family, but they're driving her crazy. They want her in Grad school; she wants a cake truck. And she's so close. This job, which pays an unbelievable forty dollars an hour to dog sit Viceroy, an adorable little cairn terrier, is all she'll need to reach her goal and buy a used truck. 

Felix is just shy of feeling perfectly happy with his life. Granted, he needs a vampire to sponsor and turn him from half-blood to full-blood. But aside from that, everything else is just fine. Until the little dog he bit, entirely in self-defense, shows up at his loft in SoHo and makes his life a living hell. 

Viceroy has decided that even though Felix can be an ass, he has a good side. Well, okay, not really a good side, but he can grill a decent steak, and he has a nice loft and great friends even if he thinks Gracie and Lucy are beneath him. 

Lucy has been trying to quit her job for ten years, even if walking out is a bit more complicated for reapers than for humans. Especially when your boss, Death, doesn't want to lose you. But after more than four centuries, Lucy wants her humanity back. And she just might get it this year if she's willing to put aside everything she believes. 

But no one pays forty dollars an hour for simple dog walks in the park unless there's something seriously wrong with the dog. Gracie learns that the world she thought she knew is only the part the humans see, the job you interview for isn't always the job you end up with, and getting up close and personal with Death has some interesting benefits.
