I Hate Goodbyes

The joke used to be that I hated hockey.

Now my entire life revolves around a rink, a town, and a pack of stubborn, infuriating men who would wreck themselves for me-and for each other.

The league loves a miracle story, and the Rinkrats are the miracle of the year. A once-dead team surging toward the championship, a tiny town rallying behind them, a coach's little sister who just happens to be everywhere at once.

What the cameras don't show is the rest of it.

The quiet way my brother stares at the ice like if they lose, it'll kill him. The contracts on the table that say we can keep the team... if we move them to a city that isn't ours. The owners who smile and insist they're doing what's "best for the sport."

And my pack, pulled in twenty different directions at once:

• Some of them could make more money anywhere else.
• Some of them finally feel like they belong-for the first time in their lives.
• All of them are terrified I'm going to wake up and decide the safe choice is to walk away.

They're wrong.

I'm done pretending I'm not all in.

But choosing them means more than falling into bed and calling it destiny. It means finding a way to protect this town, this team, and this loud, complicated, beautiful pack from a world that doesn't have a box for what we are.

No neat roles. No clean endings. No guarantees.

Just one last shot at rewriting the rules-on the ice and off it-before someone else writes the ending for us.
