The feeling is not a measurement.

Everybody is asleep. The kitchen is more or less done. This is the part of the day you have been waiting for since about four in the afternoon-and what you are doing with it is replaying a thirty-second exchange from six hours ago.

It is never the big things. It is the tone you used about the shoes. The face you probably made. The two seconds where you did not answer a question because you were tired.

Three things arrive together and get mistaken for one.

You are tired in a way that specifically affects judgement. You have no comparison worth anything - you see other families at their most managed, and your own at its worst. And parenting produces almost no feedback: nobody tells you it is going well, and a person who only receives error reports will always conclude they are performing badly, regardless of how they are actually performing.

That is not a fact about you. This is based on the information available.

What is in it:

  • Why it has a specific hour - not three in the afternoon, not seven, but somewhere after nine, when there is nothing left between you and the reviewing
  • What the day actually reported: forty things that went fine and generated no evidence at all
  • Why resolving to do better tomorrow is a promise made by the most depleted version of you.
  • Postponing the assessment - you are allowed to decline to conclude your own parenting after nine at night.
  • Manually supplying the data the day did not give you.
  • Repairing once, properly, and letting it be finished
  • What children actually need, said plainly, because it is what the feeling is measuring you against and usually measuring wrong.
  • Things to say to yourself, out loud, and two to stop telling yourself
  • Where it comes from - including the specific modern layer that no generation before this one had
  • Why reassurance from the other adult rarely lands, and what to ask for instead
  • The evidence you are not letting yourself count

This one is not about your child. There is nothing in it to try tomorrow, and no part of it is about managing anybody. It is the only one in the range like that.

The people who feel this most are rarely the ones who should. The parents who lie awake wondering whether they are getting it wrong are, almost without exception, not the ones getting it wrong.

Today was hard, and I didn't see you handle everything well. Neither did anybody else.

"Go to bed. Decide on Saturday."

For the parent, not the child. Sixty-four pages, small enough for a coat pocket.

This book supports everyday emotional awareness. It is not a screening tool, and it is not a substitute for professional guidance.

From the Little Signals world: quiet stories and tools that help small humans notice their signals and find their way back to steady. No quick fixes. No hype. Regulation before optimisation.
