Life Downtown A Strategy to Encourage Market-Rate Housing in Calgary's Downtown Core

This Master s Degree Project (MDP) looked at ways§that Calgary s City Council and downtown planning§team could foster an increase in market-rate housing§development in the City s central business district§(CBD). The policy objectives were two fold: to§increase the vitality of the lifeless downtown core§after business hours, and to decrease some of the§pressure on suburban development leading towards a§more sustainable city. After examining the§approaches of other Canadian and American cities, the§MDP described some strategies that could work for the§City to increase the number of residential units in§the CBD. Attitudinal interviews were held with a few§members of the downtown residential development§industry and with Aldermen who were available for§comment. The conclusions drawn suggest that it may§only be a matter of time before the market in Calgary§is ready for housing in the CBD. Some citizens of§Calgary were beginning to see the benefits of living§in downtown; whereas, it would take longer for others§to accept living in the Central Business District.
