History of the Ohio State University

"History of the Ohio State University" offers a comprehensive and scholarly examination of one of America's premier land-grant institutions. In this second volume, author Thomas C. Mendenhall continues the detailed narrative of the university's growth, focusing on the critical periods of expansion and organizational maturation that defined its early decades. The work meticulously documents the evolution of academic departments, the construction of iconic campus landmarks, and the administrative shifts that steered the institution toward its modern identity.

Through detailed accounts of faculty contributions, student life, and the university's relationship with the state of Ohio, Mendenhall captures the spirit of higher education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This volume serves as an essential resource for historians of education, alumni, and those interested in the social and cultural impact of public universities in the Midwest. By preserving the administrative records and personal anecdotes of the era, the work provides a vivid window into the challenges and triumphs of establishing a world-class educational center during a transformative period in American history.
