History of the Donner Party

"History of the Donner Party" provides a harrowing and definitive account of one of the most tragic episodes in the history of American westward expansion. The narrative follows the 1846-1847 expedition of pioneers who, seeking a new life in California, found themselves trapped by massive snowfalls in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This work meticulously details the hardships faced by the party, including starvation, isolation, and the extreme measures required for survival during a brutal winter.

Written by C.F. McGlashan, the text is based on extensive research, including interviews with survivors and access to personal letters and journals. The book goes beyond mere sensationalism to offer a somber and respectful historical record of the courage, despair, and resilience of the men, women, and children involved. It provides a deep exploration of the geographical challenges of the Truckee Pass and the psychological toll of their ordeal. This work stands as an essential piece of Western Americana, offering profound insights into the risks of the mid-19th-century frontier and the enduring human spirit in the face of catastrophe.
