Her nagging ambivalence about being Jewish heightens the conflict. A refugee from Nazi Germany contemplates an affair with a gentile while asserting herself in business and in marriage during World War II. Shipped off by her parents with companion Brigitte, young Hannelore starts a new life in New York City. Through Brigitte's new American husband, Hannelore meets strapping, rich Rick Albright. She's also introduced to awkward Marvin Rosenbaum, whome Hannelore marries after he gets her pregnant. The strongest aspect of the narrative is the realistic, intense relationship between girlfriends Brigitte and Hannelore, though an eventual revelation about their past rings false.
