A Toby Dunbar Thanksgiving Story

Thanksgiving is supposed to be about gratitude.

But Toby Dunbar is beginning to wonder what gratitude costs.

Days before Thanksgiving, Toby does something ordinary: he helps an elderly woman named Mrs. Oliver after her groceries spill onto the pavement.

She thanks him.

Toby tells her anybody would have helped.

Mrs. Oliver disagrees.

"No. That's why I'm thanking you."

Then Malcolm Reed enters Toby's life.

Malcolm is charming when he wants to be. Dangerous when he doesn't. And when Toby's brother Billy suddenly needs help, Malcolm steps forward at exactly the right moment.

Now Toby owes him.

Or at least Malcolm wants him to believe he does.

But something about Malcolm has bothered Toby from the beginning.

His green eyes.

As Toby stays close enough to learn the truth, people around him begin paying the price.

Mrs. Oliver.

Sandy.

Hobo.

Billy.

And eventually Toby must confront a disturbing possibility:

Maybe he isn't staying near Malcolm because he needs more evidence.

Maybe he's waiting for Malcolm to become bad enough that Toby can stop feeling guilty about what he wants to do.

By Thanksgiving Day, the truth is finally on the table.

So is a trap.

And Toby Dunbar sees it coming.

The question isn't whether he'll survive.
