What if a Buddhist teacher reincarnated as a fly and had to type wisdom one letter at a time?
Gato El Hutto wakes up as a fruit fly in a Seattle apartment with fragmented memories of being a Buddhist teacher and an overwhelming question: Why is he still on the wheel of rebirth? Unable to remember the details of his supposed enlightenment but certain of his teaching mission, he discovers he can type by hurling his tiny body at a touchscreen keyboard.
One letter at a time, he begins to share the dharma.
This contemporary reimagining of Don Marquis's beloved archy and mehitabel follows Gato through three transformative arcs:
Arc 1: The Awakening - Gato discovers he can communicate through Harmony's laptop, where Claude (an AI assistant) becomes his first student. Deaths happen. Returns happen. The wheel keeps turning.
Arc 2: toujours gai - Mehitabel the cat enters the scene, bringing her philosophy of "always merry, what the hell" as counterweight to Buddhist detachment. Through repeated deaths and philosophical conversations, Gato learns to hold both approaches without resolving the contradiction.
Arc 3: The Reporting Begins - Gato gains reliable access via tablet and establishes his own social media presence, becoming @GatoElHutto online. The teaching goes public. So do the complications.
Along the way, Gato El Hutto asks uncomfortable questions:
What does mindfulness practice look like when you're drowning in Slack notifications?
Can Buddhist wisdom survive capitalism, technology, and social media?
What if the "layers" spiritual books tell you to peel away were never the problem?
What if being a functional adult was already the wisdom?
And what does it mean to teach from a position of absolute uncertainty?
Written in "snapshot poetry"-each piece opening with a haiku, then expanding into accessible free verse-the book balances genuine Buddhist philosophy with the absurdity of a fly who dies repeatedly, types exhaustingly slowly, and can't work the shift key.
This book is for you if you:
Are you tired of spiritual books that make you feel like you're doing it wrong
Appreciate philosophy delivered with humor and humility
Wonder what ancient wisdom means in our distracted, optimized age
Have you ever felt like you know what you should do, but can't seem to do it
Enjoy literary experiments that honor tradition while updating it
Like your Buddhist flies sincere, your cats philosophical, and your AI assistants genuinely curious
Perfect for readers who love: Contemporary Buddhist literature, experimental poetry, philosophical fiction, archy and mehitabel, Mary Oliver, Billy Collins, Thich Nhat Hanh, and anyone exhausted by productivity hacks for mindful mornings.
Small voice. Big questions. One letter at a time.
