Socrates, Plato's master, taught his disciple the very art of Maieutics, which Plato later knew how to use to best effect in his philosophical dialogues. Few people nowadays tend to remember that maieutiké in ancient Greek literally means "midwifery". Indeed, this method, in Socrates' intentions, was intended to embody an action similar to that of the midwife. That's why he did not pretend to teach anything, let alone put truths into people's minds. He meant, if anything, to lead people to bring forth truths out of their minds. He did not launch redemptive programs and did not pretend to drag along hordes of followers, for he was aware that Knowledge can only emerge from deep within ourselves, from the recesses of our soul. Maieutics, through dialogue and confrontation, simply directs the interlocutor's thinking until they extrapolate truth from within themselves, "giving birth" to it, indeed. This, as the great Parmenides taught us, can be possible by activating nóos, intuition, which is the true magic word with which we should all equip ourselves.
In the vast majority of human beings, obfuscated by millennia of counter-initiatory slavery, the mere thought of an ascent into the higher world leads to serious misunderstanding, when not outright fright and dismay, because after all, they feel happy and have the illusion of being protected in the daily darkness of their cave, while their eyes are deceived by vague shadows that the "guardians" cast on the white wall of their minds. It is much easier, indeed, not to ask questions and live with delusional serenity in their daily Matrix.
The work that the reader is about to meditate upon presents itself as a necessary and rigorous investigation into the authentic nature of Philo-Sophia, understood not as a mere dialectical exercise, but as an initiatory itinerary and a tool for inner transmutation. In an era of profound spiritual involution, Nicola Bizzi, a historian and scholar of esoteric disciplines, invites us to rediscover the indissoluble bond that unites philosophical speculation to the subterranean currents of the Mystery Tradition, restoring to thought its original function as a "sacred science".
Through a precise re-reading of the Socratic and Platonic magisterium, the text highlights how Maieutics is not a simple technique of persuasion, but rather an obstetric art of the soul. It does not aim to instill truths from the outside, but to favor the birth of that Knowledge which lies latent in the recesses of being. In this sense, philosophy is configured as an act of courage: the individual effort of one who, driven by an untiring passion for truth, accepts to abandon the reassuring shadows of the "cave" to turn towards the dazzling light of intuition, the nóos.
The author performs an operation of great methodological interest by juxtaposing the Platonic allegory with modern evidence from behavioral psychology, such as Gordon Stephenson's experiment. This parallelism lays bare the mechanisms of "counter-initiatory slavery" and dogmatic conditioning that, for millennia, have held humanity bound to a partial and illusory reality. The essay forcefully denounces how the crystallization of imposed rules and the triumph of monotheisms have severed that umbilical cord which, in the ancient world, made man close to the divine.
In these pages, therefore, Philo-Sophia returns to being what it has always been for the Initiates: a ray of light capable of piercing the opacity of the daily "Matrix". It is an invitation to awaken from the sleep of animal consciousness to undertake the path towards real Awareness, rediscovering the wonder of a cosmos where the visible is but the veil of the invisible.
