Fortune Favors the Wicked

In this "richly rewarding Regency tale" (Booklist, STARRED review), a quick-witted courtesan and a roguish sailor join forces on a treasure hunt that spans England...

A vicar's daughter turned courtesan, Charlotte Perry has made a powerful enemy and needs money to start a new life. Her solution: win the Royal Mint's reward for recovering a fortune in stolen gold. A chance discovery has drawn the nation's treasure hunters to her sleepy Derbyshire birthplace, so she'll have to guard her secrets closely while under her parents' roof. Too bad they've taken in an unexpected houseguest, a charming former sailor. Benedict Frost is handsome and clever-and he can hold his own in a knife fight. Charlotte planned to treasure-hunt alone, but he might just be the perfect partner...

As a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Benedict took pleasure in traveling the world and seizing the day. A twist of fate left him blind, then led him into an ingenious new career-and eventually, unwillingly, back to England. The royal reward would give him the freedom to embark on his next adventure, if he can persuade the fascinating Charlotte into an alliance.

In a rural village far from the lives they've dreamed of, Benedict and Charlotte form a partnership that leads to a passionate affair. For the first time, Charlotte shares her secrets-and Benedict opens his heart. But the past still has power to wound, and danger closes in around them. They'll have to choose: should they pursue the royal reward and be parted forever...or surrender to a love they might not survive?
