Aeryn Lefrançois is human.
Mostly.
Her childhood was spent surrounded by Wächter, but her mother forbade her from learning their secrets. As an adult she understands little of their struggles - the history of sacrifice and hardship, the decades of dwindling hope. In a field of sunflowers, her father gives her a glimpse into his world, tapping into the tiny bit of Guardian blood she has, manifesting what he calls
a Compass.
Then he abandons his family because of that aggravatingly mysterious word:
Wächter.
Years later, Aeryn's best friend Genesis Bellamy disappears because of what the word means, and her ignorance will not protect her from those who seek her family's ruin:
The Shadows.
At the moment she feels abandoned and utterly lost, she's burdened with leading her father's people
home.
These people she knows nothing about. These people she has every right to despise.
These people with whom she shares little more than a trace of blood and a collection of foreign words.
Aeryn loses everything - very nearly herself along the way - but with the help of sunflowers, songs, and perhaps a rekindled love, can she find it in herself to forgive her father and follow her heart?
