Merel Sowanoke has a secret she's desperate to forget, a past she wants to erase, and an urgent desire to recreate her life. Striving to begin anew, Merel leaves behind her hometown and all those she's ever called family. 

Thankful for her opportunity as the newest second-grade teacher at Patrick Schelly Elementary, Merel throws herself into preparations to meet her students. New routines, fresh faces, a rewarding career-Merel believes the worst of her days are long gone. So why are the old memories resurfacing? It is her student Jay, however, who dredges up the nightmare Merel can't bear to relive. Reality and recall tumble together, leaving Merel in a wash of darkness that slowly unpacks the history she'd tucked away.

In Fate Falls Hard, one impulsive decision is the catalyst in a series of events that have mounting repercussions for multiple generations. Aspiration, fortune, and resentment twist and turn, coiling together three women driven by their own yearnings. One force links them all, but none of the women know of the ferocity with which it controls them. The women's fates may be a pre-determined set of events, but something sinister controls their destinies.
