Fantonma

Gloria Steinem said a gender-equal society would be one where the word "gender" does not exist; where everyone can be themselves.
This was the society Fantonma was born to achieve.

Fantonma was born into the family of chief Badejo, a wealthy chief, at a time when society still erroneously believe that a female child was substandard to a male child. Her father wasn't innocent of this belief either, in fact, he seems to believe in the wrong fallacy of a male child being superior to a female child more than his counterparts.
And it was his search for male children that led him to marry many wives.

Sadiyyah was one of chief Badejo's many wives, one he married because of her family history of having more male children than females but unfortunately for Sadiyyah, she wasn't as lucky as her mother's, she was blessed with only a daughter. Fantonma.

The rejected daughter of her husband. But Sadiyyah wasn't about to reject her daughter because of a false societal belief and so she decides to raise her like she would a male child and give her all the education only a male child was entitled to.
Everyone thought and saw her plight as crazy but she vowed not to stop until she makes a great child out of the daughter her husband called worthless.

She was going to use her daughter to prove to the world that a woman isn't worthless, a woman can offer more than just been confined to the four walls of the kitchen and bedroom.

There was only one challenge facing mother and daughter
It wasn't the taunting and jeering coming at them from every angle
It was, how mother and daughter would survive when her husband and the father of her daughter had rejected them.
