Exhibit G

What does it mean to be a Palestinian living in America during an active genocide on the Palestinian people? This is the question at the centre of Fady Joudah’s new work. In this searing assemblage of poems, essays and photographs, Joudah uses his position as both poet and doctor to examine and respond to the catastrophic impact of Israel’s assault on the people of Gaza. As erudite as it is tender, Exhibit G bonds together the relationship between poetry, lyric essays and photography, inviting readers to consider what genocide looks like from both an interior and exterior perspective. The images selected neither sidestep horror nor “curate” genocide. Exhibit G is not only an indictment on European, U.S. and Israeli policy, but an artefact which captures the steadfastness and inconceivable will of the Palestinian people. Readers will find Joudah grappling with his own position of being both Palestinian and American; physician, poet and subject. The collection guides readers through the mess and injustice that has been enforced upon the Palestinians since 1948. As he reminds us, ‘Palestinian interiority prevails over the unspeakable, because Palestinians experienced the unspeakable more than once, expressed it as that threshold beyond which all suffering is created equal, and all joy for life, too.’
