The door opened. Both sides felt it.

Eva stood at the threshold - both Witnesses in position, the channel at harmonic condition, the Veil open for the first time in six centuries - and for thirty seconds, she was the bridge. Heaven and the Underworld in genuine communication. Mikaela on the other side, alive and real and waiting.

Then Heaven fired the fifth Nullifier into the opening and cracked the Veil into a wound that will not close.

The Academy is bleeding. Prior iterations surfacing in the corridors - rooms reverting, stone shifting, the building's hold on the current reality thinning by the day. Mikaela crossed through the wound before it could seal and arrived damaged, luminous, carrying six centuries of answers Eva needs and a seeking mechanism that followed her through. Heaven has sent Arbiters to destroy the node, retrieve the Sealer who defected, and contain the Witness who will not be contained.

Eva has learned what the recursion is. Not erasure - revision. Every reset is a draft. The Witnesses are the editors. The one who remembers chooses what reality holds next. This is what the Assembly sealed the Veil to hide: not the cost of the opening, but the power of it.

Soran's hands are scarred with a previous Witness's editorial notes. He has been continuing their work for 249 years without knowing it, and the Arbiters just made sure he can't hold the pen the same way again. Kalixo is running out of political rooms - the dominant faction has taken the Assembly by coup, and forty years of network are narrowing to a single play. Trystane has read the treaty's deepest text and understood what it always said: the heir persists with the Witness through discontinuity. He intends to make that literal, whatever it costs him.

The building is choosing sides. The warden is spending himself. The floor keeps rising. And Eva is learning that the question was never whether she could open the door.

The question is what she carries through it.
