This book suggests that the teaching of language and particularly English for Academic Purposes (EAP) needs to move beyond a focus on text analysis as the font of all academic knowledge. Beginning with an exploration of the roots of linguistics, the authors then examine the branches of the discipline, highlighting how these branches are connected to the root by their assertion and guiding principle that language can be studied through the products of the written texts constructed using the Greco-Roman alphabet. While textual analysis tools such as genre analysis, discourse analysis, and academic literacies are important for helping students studying a range of subjects, the authors argue that students - and their teachers - also need to know about elements of language that are not based in, or derived from, the written text. This book will be of interest to practitioners, students, teachers and researchers in the fields of Applied Linguistics, TESOL, English Medium Instruction (EMI), EAP and language education policy.
