In February 2017, my fiancé disappeared after pulling me into the cyclone of his opioid addiction. Writing poetry was my therapy. I hope that they will be comforting or validating to people who've had similar experiences. This is the first poem:

He's on the street.
My love is on the street.

How could it be that it is I who put him there,
The only way to protect myself from the poison that has taken him over.

His body, and my heart, are penetrated by the chill of December,
Exhausted by sleeping on cold concrete,
Subject to the dangers of the city.

My attempts to get help,
My attempts to keep him alive, fed, sheltered
Only embolden the monster that has consumed him.

Enabling, enabling, unable to stop,
My heart shattering each time I have to force him out.

He's on the street.
My love is on the street.
