In recent years, more and more security-sensitive activitieslike shopping or banking transactions are carried out over theInternet, an inherently insecure medium. In addition, many of theseactivities are performed using small, mobile devices, severelylimited in terms of available energy, memory, and computationalpower. This work describes the development of a genericcryptographic library in ANSI C that allows to use the memorysaving elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) over arbitrary prime andbinary extension fields in the secure sockets layer protocol (SSL)to facilitate encrypted communication over the Internet. Inaddition, the impact of instruction set extensions on theperformance of cryptographic operations is investigated. Thedeveloped library needs only five percent of the memory OpenSSLrequires, with a comparable performance in prime fields, and aperformance gain between factors two and eight whenusinginstruction set extensions over the OpenSSL implementation.
