Following a transcendent encounter in the rainforest with ancestral spirits that follow her across continents, Adeline struggles with reconciling the past with fears for the future. Her story of dissent takes place in the early twentieth century where she casts aside societal norms and family expectations to realize what it means to be truly independent. It is a story about overcoming self-doubts and learning to survive in a man's world as she navigates through insecurities and failed relationships. Her journey takes Adeline to the Amazon rainforest on a crusade to right a terrible wrong; along the campaign trail as a reporter following a socialist candidate for the presidency in 1912; and to London as she covers labor unrest and the growing suffrage movement as an investigative journalist for a newspaper focusing on class issues. She fights injustice wherever she encounters it even as she struggles with the duality and hypocrisy in some of the causes she supports. And eventually Adeline reaches the moment of her ultimate test.
Does she fall in love? Yes. Does she fall out of love? A few times. Does she find what she's looking for? It depends. She keeps a detailed diary, and is very introspective along her journey. She also writes to family and friends and from these letters the reader finds how truly vulnerable she is, even though the persona she projects is one of confidence and, at times, cunning. She's an enigma wrapped up in an early twentieth century whirlwind. She is courageous, resilient, and restless.
