Danny is acutely adrift at age twenty-seven.
He lives alone on a dirty-ugly Boston street; no girl, profession or diploma, being himself a high school dropout on account of pulling down his pants in front of his classmates.
On the heels of an unintentional suicide, Danny searches for Cromwell, his former high school history teacher and basketball coach, finding him at the strip club where Lyra regularly awes the eyes of men.
Thanks to Danny, Lyra loses her gig that night and Cromwell is punched in the eye. Freud's three human miseries beset them for the next three days on Plum Island, leading them to a road trip to Mayes, Kansas, where Cromwell wishes to mend a long lost friendship. Having married his childhood friend's sweetheart, Cromwell's aspiration of repairing their friendship is laden with obstacles.
Cromwell has also to confront his sister's determination to part ways with their land, which includes a Native American's Kanza people burial site. Danny's internal conflicts are unearthed during the tribe's sacred ritual with the help of an elusive young Kanza.
Five years later, after starving in Spain under bottles of cheap wine, Danny is tasked with rescuing Lyra in Las Vegas and bring her back to Plum Island to care for Cromwell ... and the girl with sand between her toes.
