Ireland in the 1800s was a deeply divided place: between rich and poor, between Protestant and Catholic, between modernisers and conservatives, between the owners of the land and those who worked it. Tommy Brennnan, known as Crimee Tommy because of his soldiering in the Crimean War 1854-56 seeks to navigate his way through the challenges of a country and culture in the spasms of radical change. He leads an adventurous life; fighting the Russians in the Crimea, taking part in the Fenian uprising in 1867 and working with Parnell for land reform and Irish independence. Outwardly successful, he is worn down by a deep sense of personal aloneness and concerns that the increasing religiosity and conformism of his modern world has destroyed all the intimate connections of trust and understanding between members of his own class.
