Accident investigation reports from high-risk industries have identified the human element as a major contributory factor. Aviation, healthcare, the military, and more recently the maritime industry have developed human element training-commonly referred to as non-technical skills or Crew Resource Management (CRM)-in an effort to address these factors. Such reports have consistently suggested that many accidents could have been avoided if human factors such as leadership, teamwork, and cultural and social aspects of communication had been adequately addressed within formal training. The overall aim of this study was to explore how cultural and social factors in the working environment impact the development and perspectives of CRM trainees. If these aspects are better understood and effectively applied, the likelihood of accidents occurring may, in theory, be reduced. To the best of the researcher's knowledge, at the time of writing, no previous research with a similar aim has been identified within the maritime industry.
