EXCERPT 'the Cost':
There were multiple angles to tackle in the maze, and I knew someone was going to notice my absence soon. I was going to have to travel faster.

I ran through several more pathways going north then south, but that wouldn't help. I needed to be headed west, and quickly. If I could get past the maze, I would have freer travel.
I tried the squeeze method and began squeezing through the thick brush. Now my belly was getting scratched, releasing more spots of blood. I was exhausted halfway through. I didn't have my normal energy level.

I couldn't go back. I was almost too exhausted to go forward, but I had to. What if I made it to the boundary, crossed it and Rosemary's baby died in my womb? I felt tears of frustration that I didn't have the mental or physical capabilities I had always had.

I suddenly froze! I heard something in the bushes to the left. Was it an animal, a criminal... or a reaper? I hadn't heard an alarm go off. We always had alarms go off when there was trouble in the Village.

What if the reapers were smarter? What if they knew I was gone but came quietly to get me? Why had none of the other tribes thought of that? It was brilliant.

Now I had a new worry. I didn't know if I was being hunted or not. When you hunt an animal, do you go in quiet? Yes! No! My panic kicked in. I didn't know if I was still in the clear or being hunted, silently.
