In the footsteps of the Decameron, this little book describes the chaotic and sympathetic adventures of a German student at a European university in Florence. A stone's throw away from Boccaccio, the Italians despise their state and all authorities, but hold high shrewdness, cunning and sensuality. The students are infected by this and become heroes and victims of satire themselves.
The series opens with a bus driver who mercilessly exposes the deplorable state of affairs in the country, but is unexpectedly generous when it comes to selling tickets. No less astonishing is the ponderous local police, who do not prosecute petty criminals, but creatively invent discounts on parking tickets. Meanwhile, there is a shipwreck off Elba under the influence of alcohol and a volcanic eruption in Sardinia in which Silvio has a hand. At the climax of the satirical carnage, a South Tyrolean landlord deceitfully throws Italian beau out of his mountain lodge, while two German academic lightweights indulge in vegetarian honey-tonguing. An overzealous conductor who mutilates himself at a concert is no longer noticeable.
But love flies above everything, only here it writes stories of a different kind: a troubadour tries in vain to beguile his sweetheart with his singing, and in the process falls off the roof of her house. A couple of students living at home have to make do with their father's car, which a precariously employed person covers with newspapers beforehand. A Spanish-Swedish couple teaches their pale-skinned offspring a language otherwise only known from Nazi films. And a four-year-old finds out under strange circumstances why the dinosaurs on Elba got extinct.
But the fun is over when the spurned Sicilian beauty Angelica appears, who wants to throw all the stories in the bin and you, poor and perhaps innocent readers of the book, right after them. Boccaccio would be delighted with his descendants, were it not for the hateful fairy Corona at the end, who as the new plague wants to wipe out old Italy. All of this happened in some way, but none of it is true!
