The question of social actors' practices (whether at the individual or collective level) is, for us, a fascinating subject for research. Whilst we are interested in the ways in which these practices are constructed and implemented in the daily lives of those involved, our aim is to understand how and why certain practices can persist over relatively long periods in the lives of people and institutions; conversely, how and why other practices embrace change and appear more inclined to evolve. The setting for our study is a medical centre that is over a century old (a former sanatorium). We focused on analysing practices, encompassing both professional actions and organisational structures (division of labour, power dynamics, etc.). All categories of staff were included in our research. It very quickly became clear to us that we could not avoid tracing the analysis sufficiently far back in history if we were to grasp the mechanisms at work in the processes of continuity and change in the practices of the various employees.
