The issue of the Earth's climates and their evolution is dominating the news in a deafening manner. It has ultimately spilled over the boundaries of science proper, encroaching upon the realm of politics. This phenomenon is accompanied by considerable confusion, concerning both concepts and methods. Observation, the foundation of all science, is currently giving way to models. Scientific debate is often replaced by ideological clashes. What is the reality of the situation? This text attempts to return to observation, to the laws of physics-particularly thermodynamics-but also to the history of the Earth and its climates, which would allow us to escape a certain anthropocentric arrogance and, ultimately, to better understand the world around us.
