Bernard Darragh knows the weight of things.
Meat in the hand. Salt in a barrel. Sixpence on an account. Then, in a Belfast market, he meets Maria McCracken. Asked the simplest of questions, Bernard gives the wrong answer. Not about a price or a measure, but about himself.
The name he chooses is Harry Bertram. It is meant to last a moment. Instead, with a little assistance from an imaginative friend and rather too many opportunities to tell the truth, Harry acquires a childhood, connections, prospects and, eventually, a life of his own. But Maria is not quite as easily deceived as Bernard hopes. The more she comes to know the man behind the name, the harder one question becomes to avoid: if someone is drawn to the person you truly are, how long can you keep hiding him? Set in Belfast and Larne in the years after the 1798 Rebellion, By All Accounts is a story of love, class, family and the uncomfortable distance between the person we are and the person we would rather be thought to be.
