This book is about Catholic chaplains; the hundreds of men and women who spend a substantial amount of their waking hours ministering in a place few people want to go, the nation's detention facilities. The This inmates they serve must be there; the chaplains are there by choice. Because of their perceived selflessness, chaplains are often treated with an admiration and respect beyond their due. I always put this admiration and respect into perspective with the words, "But I get to go home at night."
The intent of the book is to encourage others to assist in some way in this important ministry. No matter what they have done, inmates are also God's children. God desires their salvation as much as He desires ours.
You will initially be taken on a journey that leads to the call to be a chaplain. You will enter a county jail and then a California state prison. You will come to realize that a chaplain does not bring God into the prison, He is already there. This book is full of experiences that illustrate God's presence, love and mercy. It shows how inmates often become teachers, rather than students. I guarantee that this book will change your perception of detention facilities, inmates, and prison staff. Sit back and open your mind and heart. I hope you enjoy the experience.
